Sun 11 Oct – Ups, downs & a major comeback!

Round 7 of Junior Light Regionals got off to a challenging start– a computer glitch meant all karts were off kilter for Practice 1– 3. Once resolved in P4 however, Tom took 1st! Epic job by the F.A.T crew getting the kart parity back across the fleet during the session.

The afternoon began on a high with Tom 2nd in Practice. Qualifying went excellently with Tom on pole for the pre-final. But it was about to change.

The pre-final began & Jack C got a flyer of a start & with Tom following close behind they began pulling away from the rest of the pack. 3 laps in a prior backmarker incident meant Tom & Jack were already approaching to lap them. Jack got past on the straight, while under blue flags Tom waited for the backmarker to choose his line into the corner then made his move. Unfortunately the back marker ignored the flags, completely changed lines & crashed into Tom, breaking his track rod, putting him out of the race & almost back of the grid for the Final.

Despite this, with the kart fixed Tom decided to give it his all & get whatever points he could in the Final. No mean feat starting 23rd out of 25! He left the grid blasting past competitors making move after move – outside, inside & in places he’d never overtaken before. At the chequered flag he’d achieved 7th, & after penalties took 5th overall! 16 clean overtakes in 9 mins in a strong field– not bad!

Despite the championship lead slipping slightly further away due to no fault of Toms, it was definitely a drive he can be really proud of demonstrating his racing prowess to the full. Congrats Jack, Luca & Kieran – can’t believe he was only 2 places behind you all by the end of the race!
