F.A.T. Karting Round 5 - Dunkeswell
Back in the driving seat…
After missing round 4 with a wrist fracture, we were thrilled to get the all clear to race. We headed to Devon not sure what to expect as his arm was unused for a month and karting demands strength!
Saturday morning was testing thanks to our sponsors @brackenwoodwindows , Prime Cover Ltd & Niche Cover. Following work to fix kart issues (thanks @fkl.unitedkingdom crew!), Tom began getting to grips with the technical Dunkeswell track. Standards were high & competition fierce, so he was happy to be working his way up the timings.
Sunday started with reduced engine speeds following incidents on Saturday, so morning practice allowed time to adapt lines & driving styles.
Then it was time. Race afternoon began & somehow Tom found extra form taking P2 in practice. Confidence growing but with others improving too (especially Rohan who was consistently fast), Tom dug deep & popped in a flying lap in the dying seconds for pole! But the challenge wouldn’t end there.
Clearly slightly faster, in the pre-final opening stages Rohan overtook, with Tom in close chase. An epic battle ensued, but sadly Rohan’s kart cut out. Fortunately for Tom he held on to P1 & pole for the Final.
At lights out Andre began putting pressure on, leading to Tom clipping the kerb launching into the air. He didn’t lose position but to avoid a penalty for cutting the corner Tom gave up the lead. With 3 laps to go, his work was cut out to get back past but a manoeuvrer on the hairpin got him through for the the win!
A great end to his comeback weekend - congrats @aj_kart1ng & @luca_nicholls_racing on 2nd & 3rd (& @maya_racer17 for your first points) however without the kart issue we all thought the win would’ve been Rohans! To those unfortunately caught in incidents hope you recover quickly & see you at round 6.
