Grid Series - Round 2 - A slightly late race review!
Grid Series Round 2 took place on 16 February 2026. Start positions were randomised for fairness, with Tom drawing mid pack for all heats this round, and a larger and mainly faster field than round 1! Throw in a few technical issues and some challenging competitor behaviour and it made for an interesting evening....
Practice - P2
Heat 1 - Started 4th overtook and got to P1 which he held for most of the race, but with stiff competition coming up behind in the form of the current lap record holder at Reading, Alex, Tom pushed a bit too hard dropping him back after a spin to finish 4th.
Heat 2 - Started 8th, was spun out on the first lap and finished 12th due to a boost problem meaning he couldn't then gain places back.
Heat 3 - Started 9th, had made it to 6th, unfortunately had the same kart as previous heat and the boost then failed again, meaning other karts could sail past, leaving Tom 9th at the finish.
Final - Started 8th but was spun out on lap 1 by the same driver who took him out in Heat 2, dropping him down to last (15th). A great effort (and mindset in the circumstances) saw him move back through the field to finish in 6th.
Current position overall for Grid Series: 1st
Positives Tom is taking from the race:
Still leading going into round 3 (just!)
Finishing 6th in the final with some far more experienced competitors
Making it from 15th to 6th after being spun out - without that he’d have been chasing another podium
Lessons to learn:
Although the others are older, not to be too shy to point out unfair manoeuvres - sometimes that’s racing but it could be someone pushing too hard/not knowing the rules
Keep on pushing, Tom was almost at the pace of the far more experienced drivers, despite very little experience in these karts or the 3 floor track, he's keen to prove he can keep up and aiming for the top step!
